Although pregnancy is the beginning of a
new life, smoking cessation if attempted during pregnancy appears to be temporary. At
least a 1/3 of all adult women who attempt to quit during pregnancy will relapse before
delivery of the baby.
According to the US
Surgeon General’s report regarding women and smoking, most women will relapse within 12
months of delivery of their baby. (Surgeon General, 2001)
Studies suggest, however,
quitting smoking can improve birth outcomes to those of nonsmokers. (MacArthur, 1988, Br J
