Sustainable Development Indicators
Sustainable Development Indicators are meant to track the overall sustainability of a society with respect to its environmental, social and economic integrity. They are then used by governments, non-governmental organizations, community groups and research institutions as a diagnostic tool to detect trends in the environment.

The CSSP has organized the Sustainable Development Indicators conference at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina on 7-8 December 2009, the conference discussed various themes including:

  • Green Accounting
  • Biodiversity
  • Environmental Policies Laws and Conventions
  • State of Current Practice
  • Environmental Risk Management Government and Society
  • Likelihood Sustainability Success Stories
  • What is need for the future?

The conference ran in two parallel tracks, one for experts and the other for public. A key reason for a two-track approach to the Conference was to disseminate information about today's best practices on the public track while allowing the expert track to consider what more should be expected from the next generation of SDI.

A total number of 192 participants attended the conference ranging from students, academia, media, and industry officials.

Amongst the eminent speakers were John O'Connor, Independent Consultant, and OconEco Head of the Indicator Team at the Environmental Department, The World Bank, and Salah El-Serafy, Independent Economic Consultant and Former Senior Economist and Adviser at the World Bank, and Hani El Nokraschy, CEO, Nokraschy Engineering GmbH, and John Dixon, Former Lead Environmental Economist, World Bank, and Alberto Majocchi, President, Institute for Studies and Economic Analyses.
