Access to Essential Medicine: Patent and the Law

In cooperation with the International Development Law Organization (IDLO), the Bibliotheca Alexandrina(BA) organized a regional two-day workshop “Access to Essential Medicine, Patent and the Law”, at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Delegates Hall, BACC, 15-16 May 2013.

The two-day workshop covered many topics to benefit the researchers, including:

  • Discuss international and national Intellectual Property (IP) laws in the Arab region relevant to medicine access.
  • Identify how current and future trends on IP and other laws affect access to medicine in the Arab region.
  • Support regional networking on issues related to laws, and access to essential medicine.
  • Exchange of information and experience on how to improve the legal environment and practices for access to essential medicines for HIV and other diseases in the Arab region.

Application criteria

The applicants should be:

  • Lawyers, public health practitioners, and activists with experience in access to medicine of HIV and/or other diseases.
  • Government legal and policy advisors, non-governmental lawyers.
  • Civil society representatives.
  • Background in law, or pharmacology is preferable.
  • Experience in general background in IP laws is preferable.

Language

Simultaneous interpretation from Arabic into English

  • The best applicants were selected to participate; and priority was given to researchers based on their CVs and experience.
