How to Avoid the Coronavirus?

Share

Everyone is now speaking about the new coronavirus COVID-19; everywhere we go, we find information about the virus and its outbreak across numerous countries and cities, but unfortunately, a lot of this information is not accurate. That is why we have to very carefully research to find the correct information far from exaggeration or underestimation; that is our only way out safely through this ordeal, by protecting ourselves and our loved ones from this dangerous virus.

This is a new virus among the coronavirus family; it has first appeared in the Chinese city of Wuhan in 2019, and it is considered the most dangerous among the viruses of this family thus far, because of its ability to survive and spread. The virus spreads through direct contact with the spit residue from a patient's or a carrier's sneezing or coughing. It also spreads though contact with contaminated surfaces, as it is capable of surviving on them for long hours; however, it cannot reproduce except inside the human body. The symptoms of the disease caused by the new coronavirus are very similar to those of the seasonal flu; fever, coughing, difficulty breathing, with the possibility of developing pneumonia or severe acute respiratory syndrome, which can eventually lead to death in some cases.

How to Avoid Infection?

  1. Wash your hands frequently using running water and soap, making sure you do so in the correct manner. If running water and/or soap are not available, you can use alcohol of no less than 60% concentration to sanitize your hands. The correct way to wash your hands is to: soak your hands in water, apply sufficient soap, rub your hands thoroughly, especially between the fingers and under fingernails, for no less than 20 seconds, then rinse your hands with running water, and finally dry your hands using a clean towel.
  2. Cover your nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing using a paper tissue, then immediately throw it in a closed rubbish bin.
  3. Do not get in close proximity of anyone, maintaining a safe distance of at least one meter; as such, avoid shaking hands or kissing.
  4. If you feel the onset of flu-like symptoms, stay home until you recover; should you experience fever, coughing, or difficulty breathing, consult a doctor.
  5. Avoid contact with surfaces and make sure you sterilize them using chlorine.
  6. Avoid touching your mouth, nose, and eyes.
  7. Wear a face mask if you have respiratory symptoms, such as coughing or sneezing, to protect yourself and others.
  8. Stay home and avoid crowded places, especially older people and those who suffer high blood pressure, diabetes, or chronic conditions.

How to Strengthen Your Immunity to Combat Coronavirus?

The immune system is a complex web of cells, tissues, and organs that protect the body from foreign bodies that attack it; its strength inherently depends on hereditary factors. Although there are no magic wands or magical recipes to strengthen the immunity in a few days, there are factors that help the immune system work efficiently:

  1. Decrease stress and anxiety

Do not exert yourself worrying about the coronavirus; just follow the preventative instructions stated above and you will be safe. Note that anxiety weakens the immunity. Help your children get acquainted with the virus and teach them how to fight it; set with them a daily routine of cleanliness and try to make your time at home fun, as it is a unique opportunity.

  1. Improve your sleeping habits

Regular sleep helps the immune system work efficiently; as such, you should sleep 7–9 hours daily, because the body gets rid of toxins and renews its cells during sleep.

  1. Measure Your Vitamin D Level

Research has proven that vitamin D helps the body overcome diseases, because the body uses it to produce the protein used in killing viruses and bacteria. As such, you need to consume foods rich in vitamin D; such as fish, dairy, and direct sunlight.

  1. Avoid Alcoholic Drinks and Smoking

Alcohol destroys the immune system, causing its cells to lose their ability to identify harmful bodies.

  1. Consume a Balanced and Healthy Diet

Consuming balanced and healthy foods helps your body resist diseases and protects it from them. Although there are not enough studies on the specific types of foods, some are known to improve immunity; such as: garlic, ginger, citric fruits like orange and lemon, as well as marrow soup.

In conclusion, we remind you that the key through this ordeal safely is carefully searching for correct information, and protecting yourself and your loved ones against this dangerous virus.
