The two primary
types of diabetes, now called Type 1 and Type 2, both lead to the complications just
described. Increasing evidence suggests that the proportion with Type 1 diabetes may now
be as high as 15%. The microvascular complications are similar in both types of diabetes,
although, because of the older age of onset, those with Type2 diabetes have more
cardiovascular disease and less renal disease. This predominately reflects the fact that
the older individuals with Type 2 diabetes may die of heart disease before they have had
time to develop renal disease.
