In a famous diabetes clinic in Copenhagen, the Steno Clinic, patients with Type 1 diabetes have been followed for many years. It was noted over a decade ago that those who had proteinuria, i.e. kidney disease, had a much higher risk of heart disease than those that did not develop proteinuria.
