All
manifestations of cardiovascular disease are increased in diabetes and the normal male
excess of heart disease mortality is considerably reduced, i.e. the female protection
against heart disease is dramatically reduced or eliminated. Case fatality is also
increased, again especially in women. Though the standard risk factors are still operative
they dont fully explain the increased risk and neither does it seem that blood sugar
itself or duration are strong predictors of heart disease within the diabetic population. |
