This slide shows
the number of years it would take to accumulate the 1000 A1months which is characteristic
of the onset of advanced complications of Type1 diabetes. As can be seen, if one is able
to stick to the goal hemoglobin A1c of the ADA, that is below 2% above normal (i.e. below
8% for most assays), it would take 42 years to accumulate this degree of glycemic
exposure. However, if one is in poor control and consistently has an A1c around 11, it
would take a mere 18 years to develop these complications. |
