The main epidemiological features of retinopathy are shown in this slide. It can be seen that virtually 100% of Type 1 subjects will have some retinopathy by 15 to 20 years and over 70% will develop the more advanced proliferative changes. Macular oedema, on the other hand, is a more prominent feature of Type 2 diabetes.
