Many POCs are
found toxic to humans. In the United States, as mandated by the Congress,
the toxicological properties for some of these chemicals have been
systematically assessed by the U.S. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease
Registry (U.S. ATSDR). These regulatory assessment documents are published
as separate toxicological profiles for the individual chemicals of concern (e.g.,
U.S. ATSDR, 2000). The next slide provides an overview of these
toxicological properties for the POCs that have been assessed by U.S. ATSDR,
U.S. EPA, or WHO. The summary as given in the next slide is by no means
comprehensive or complete. For instance, it does not include the few
incidents where death was the toxic endpoint after (test) subjects were (accidentally)
exposed to or given a sufficiently large dose. |
