In the meantime,
what may be complicating the fish consumption issue further is the potential
for misuse or mistreatment of the fat-based Codex MRLs. As pointed out
earlier (Slide
No. 13), the Codex
Alimentarius Commission has not yet provided any MRLs for OCPs in fish.
For OCPs in meat other than marine mammals, the commission sets the MRLs on
fat basis by adopting a daily fat intake of 50 g (e.g., JECFA, 2006) from
their standard diet assumed for meat eaters. As expected, their focus on fat
basis is built upon the notion that due to their great lipophilicity, OCPs (and
other POCs as well) tend to concentrate and stay in fatty tissues. |
