As summarized in
this slide, most POCs under health risk assessment by U.S. ATSDR, U.S. EPA,
or WHO are classified as at least a possible human (i.e., G2b) carcinogen.
Many of these selected POCs were also found to cause certain adverse effects
on the liver, the kidneys, as well as on the reproductive, the immune, the
endocrine, and/or the nervous system. In fact, almost all of these chemicals
have been considered or classified as a neurotoxin; and some of them are now
labeled as environmental endocrine disruptors (Dong,
2004). It should also be pointed out
that PCBs were by far the subgroup most frequently linked to children’s
health by a considerable amount of epidemiological data. |
