These action
levels are in parts per million (ppm; mg of contaminant per kg of fish flesh,
on wet weight basis), except for dioxins (PCDDs/PCDFs) for which the levels
are in parts per trillion (ppt). The residue limits for dioxin mixtures were
determined using a toxic equivalency (TEQ) scheme in which each compound in
the mixture is attributed a specific (WHO-determined) toxic equivalency
factor (TEF) in order to account for the degree of toxicity relative to that
of 2,3,7,8-TCDD. As stated earlier (Slide
No. 12), these action levels are
residue limits at or above which U.S. FDA has authority to take legal action
to remove the product from the market. |
